Getting started

Set up your first game

Use these steps when you are opening Cage Keeper for the first time or handing it to someone new.

First-time setup

  1. Create your first team.
  2. Add your first goalie profile.
  3. Open a new game and choose the team, goalie, and opponent.
  4. Start tracking with the save and goal buttons on the main game screen.

Live tracking tips

  • Primary stats stay visible. Save percentage, shots, and Goalie Game Score update while you track.
  • Quick actions handle the details. Clears, failed clears, ground balls, turnovers, and caused turnovers are available on the same screen.
  • Undo is there when you need it. If you tap the wrong action, correct it before moving on.

Feature guide

What the app tracks and organizes

Cage Keeper is built around live goalie tracking first, then post-game review and exports.

Tracking and history

  • Advanced filtering. Review games by goalie, opponent, season, game type, date range, location, completion state, or performance level.
  • Multi-goalie support. Add a goalie during an active game and switch between goalies without losing the current session.
  • Practice sessions count too. Practice is supported through the game type selector when you start a new game.

Metrics and exports

  • Goalie Game Score. GGS combines positive plays like saves and clears with the negative events that matter after the whistle.
  • Performance tiers. Color-coded save percentage ranges help you scan strong and weak games quickly.
  • Export options. Use CSV for spreadsheets, text for quick sharing, and JSON for a full backup.

Backups

Keep your data portable

Your tracked data lives on your device today, so exports matter whenever you want an extra copy or a clean handoff.

CSV

Best when you want to open stats in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers for your own analysis.

Text

Best when you want a readable summary you can send to a coach, parent, or player right away.

JSON

Best when you want a full backup of games, goalies, and teams, or when you are moving data to another device.

FAQ

Common questions

The answers below cover the questions that come up most often once people start tracking real games.

How do I filter games?

Open Game History, choose the filters you need, and combine them until the list matches the games you want to study.

Can I track multiple goalies in one game?

Yes. Start with one goalie, then use the add or switch controls during tracking to keep each goalie’s stats separate.

Is there a limit to how many games I can track?

No. You can keep adding games, goalies, and teams without an in-app cap.

Does the app sync between devices?

Data is stored locally on your device today. Use JSON export when you want a backup or need to move data to another device.

What is a should-save goal?

It is a goal that felt reasonably saveable. Tracking it can help separate difficult shots from positioning or reaction issues.

What does Goalie Game Score mean?

It is Cage Keeper’s broader performance measure that goes beyond save percentage and includes other positive and negative goalie events.

Troubleshooting

When something feels off

Most problems fall into one of the situations below.

The app will not open

  • Restart your iPhone. A clean restart fixes most launch issues.
  • Update iOS. Make sure your iPhone is running a supported version of iOS.
  • Reinstall if needed. If you do this, make sure you already exported a backup if the device still had important data.

The stats look wrong

  • Check the game details. Review saves, goals, and quick actions in the current game or the saved history entry.
  • Use undo while tracking. Correct mistaken taps before the sequence moves too far ahead.
  • Compare exports. If needed, export the game data and review the raw numbers outside the app.

I lost a game

If you ended a game by mistake, return to the home screen and look for the resume option while the session is still recent.

Migration help

Moving over from Cage Keeper Classic

Keep the process simple: export once from Classic, then import that backup into the current app.

How to move your data

  1. Open Cage Keeper Classic and export a full JSON backup.
  2. Save that file somewhere you can reach from your iPhone.
  3. Open Cage Keeper and go to Settings.
  4. Import the JSON backup and confirm that your games, goalies, and teams came through.

Before you delete anything

  • Keep a copy of the JSON backup. Treat it as your migration safety net.
  • Check counts after import. Make sure the right teams, goalies, and game history are present.
  • Ask for help if something is missing. Support is easier before the old backup file disappears.
